Happy Fourth!
Kind of late, but I just got back from an evening of celebrating Independence Day, Italian-style!Well, if that means a night at a caving meeting, then it's true.
No, really though, it was no typical meeting. To make things a bit more festive, some friends had us over for an Independence Day summer dinner, complete with flags, fireworks, a cowboy hat and a taco salad that I brought along. After that, we met up with other cavers for our monthly meeting. I had some extra fireworks (we're talking sparklers, not the mini-dynamite bombs Italians are famous for), some cupcakes, and some more little flags--as well as some friends to hum the American Anthem with as the meeting finished up. It was fun, in the freezing cold night weather, dancing around with sparklers with a bunch of Italian friends who were willing to humor my American side by joining in the celebration. Sure, it was no city skyline of fireworks set to music, but we were plenty, all gathered in a circle and watching the sparks from our hand-held fireworks blink and fly into the summer night.
All in all, it's been a pleasant 4th of July--surprisingly festive for a medieval hill town in the middle of Italy, where very few of us Americans abide.
Hope your festivities were just as fun, if not more so!
Family--I miss you and love you and added a new word of the day! Cyndi--sorry it doesn't look like we're going to get to meet up, but have a wonderful trip in the states! Corrie--hope you are having a great time in Spain! To all: HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!
